Texas, the nation’s second most populous state had the second largest gain in net domestic migration in recent years and during the two decades, the two largest Texas metropolitan areas, Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston moved from below the top five to positions four and five respectively.

Data shows a significant number of Californians moving to Texas, with over 80,000 — many in the high-tech sector — relocated there in 2019 alone. Dozens of California-grown companies such as Oracle, Hewlett-Packard and Tesla moved here also.

Although California had been their home for over 50 years with its miles of beautiful beaches, abundant mountains, and endless sunshine, when they approached retirement they felt the cost of living was just too high in CA for how they want to live and travel in their retirement years.

The Charlsons have 5 adult children and several grandchildren in CA so they wanted to live no more than a three-hour flight from Los Angeles. So, in the last few years in preparation for this move they visited many states to see what they had to offer. Lisa and Daryl visited Arizona, Washington, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, and Texas. And they chose Texas hands down!

One of the biggest reasons was the significantly lower cost of living. They found lower utility bills, absolutely amazing people, and the cost to buy or build a custom home at about 50% less than in California. 

They also have a group of friends, 8 couples altogether, who for the Charlsons, are also a part of their family. One by one they have been moving to Montgomery County, Texas and once they started visiting them to see what enticed them to retire to Texas, Lisa and Daryl were hooked too! One of the biggest things they noticed coming to Texas from California are the friendly generous people.

After researching thoroughly for the perfect retirement home, they decided to build exactly what they envisioned. So, the hunt was on for the perfect piece of land to build a dream home on.
